Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. As a child Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford became attracted to acting in her teenaged years, and joined the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time, Ford decided that this was not the best place for her. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". In the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate was also a regular performer in theatre and eventually joined The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate was recognized for her comedy stand-up and became part of her portfolio in 1996.
